Nixzmary's mother: `This is messed up'

NEW YORK - Nixzmary Brown's mother says she didn't call for help because the dying 7-year-old seemed to be reviving.

Brooklyn jurors heard a videotaped police interview Monday in which Nixzaliz Santiago described the battered child's final moments.

Santiago says Nixzmary, one of six children, behaved wildly and once burned her baby brother's leg.

When shown photos of her emaciated child's bruised body, the sobbing Santiago said on the tape, "This is messed up."

Nixzmary's death hastened child welfare reforms. Her stepfather, Cesar Rodriguez, was convicted of manslaughter for delivering the fatal blow.

Evidence on Friday included a 911 recording in which a neighbor frantically shouted that the little girl was unconscious.
